Abstract. The article presents the results of a study of migration processes in the Republic of Mordovia. The goal is to study the dynamics, structure, and directions of migration flows in the Republic of Mordovia. The relevance of the topic is due to the increasing global migration activity, which leads to significant transformations in the social structure of regions, both in terms of population size and quality. These changes create a range of cultural, social, and demographic challenges. Some regions benefit from population inflows, while others face the negative consequences of outflows.

The study revealed that migration flows in Mordovia are unstable, and external (including short-term) factors have a significant impact on their volume and intensity. Interregional migration prevails in the migration structure, and there is a high proportion of permanent migration and a significant amount of labor migration. Migration activity is concentrated in the working-age population, with highly educated individuals leaving the region and individuals with basic education arriving. The low proportion of children (0–15 years old) and the persistent migration outflow pose long-term risks to the region’s demographic development. The mass outflow of qualified personnel undermines the region’s economic potential. The identified trends create a complex of interrelated problems: the outflow of working-age and child population accelerates the aging of society and leads to a decrease in the birth rate; the mass departure of qualified personnel undermines the region’s labor potential; the selective nature of migration (the departure of educated individuals and the influx of less qualified individuals) can reduce the overall human capital of the territory.
