Abstract. The research is carried out in the mainstream of system-functional and interpretative linguistics and is devoted to the analysis of linguistic means of expressing the semantics of extreme, which is significant for the Russian national character. The author believes that the means of expressing the semantics of extreme are hierarchically organized and presented at different levels of the language. This article attempts to describe the manifestation of extreme in the images of the main characters of the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky «The Brothers Karamazov», which can be considered as a reflection of the national mentality of the Russian people. In addition, the author has identified and analyzed some linguistic means of expressing the semantics of extreme. A review of the works of scientists and critics devoted to the work of F.M. Dostoevsky allows us to note that the main idea of the novel «The Brothers Karamazov» is contained in the so-called «Karamazovshchina». In the course of the study, contexts were analyzed that confirm the manifestations of «Karamazovshchina» as a symbol of unrestrainedness, excess, which in some cases is nominated through the constituents of extreme field, and in others only when describing the character, lifestyle, actions, behavior of the characters; and also in their speech. The author comes to the conclusion that each of the analyzed characters of the novel is characterized by the manifestation of extremes. F.P. Karamazov is characterized by irritability, short temper and arrogance. D. Karamazov is characterized by impatience, passion, anxiety, irritability, suffering, jealousy. The excess in the character and behavior of I. Karamazov is expressed in radical religious ideas and love feelings. In the image of A. Karamazov, the extreme is manifested in excessive love for all people, modesty, chastity. The author concludes that «Karamazovshchina», as a symbol of excess, unrestrainedness, is marked by the presence or absence of constituents of extreme field.
