“Floating” frames and slots in the theory of metaphorical modeling

Abstract. The purpose and novelty of the research under consideration are connected with the author’s view of the phenomenon of internal and external semantic diffusion of metaphorical models in the terms of “floating” frames and slots revealed in the structure of several models or recurring within one model by similar semantic features.

The problem of semantic diffusion of metaphorical models in contemporary linguistics is defined by the general problem of fuzziness of borders of human knowledge about the surrounding world, stored in linguistic consciousness, as well as by features of its presentation in discourse. Semantic diffusion entails a variety of other problems, connected with fixation of conceptual fields of certain metaphorical models, and with their differentiation in discourse. Due to its large scale, this problem still remains unsolved. In different types of discourse and in different languages, units of metaphorical models come into contact in a different way. It is necessary that a sufficient amount of evidentiary material should be collected before making generalizations on the level of a certain language or a cultural space.

The analysis of functioning units of the military metaphorical model in political online discourse in English has shown that the presence of “floating” frames and slots in the structure of the metaphorical model gives evidence on its semantic diffusion. “Floating” frames and slots do not only provide coherence of the military model via it internal diffusion, but give directions of its discourse combinability with units of the sports, zoomorphic and culinary models, and the models of the House and the Travel in political online discourse in English due to external diffusion of the model. Thus, the semantic borders of the studied metaphorical model are fuzzy inside, as well as open to interaction with other models.

The research is made with the help of the terminological apparatus and the empirical material collected by the author in the course of working on the dissertation research.
