Abstract. The article is devoted to the comparative study of functional peculiarities of the negation markers in Spanish and Russian languages.
The question of the semantic status of the negation category being still under discussion in modern linguistics, the author of the article focuses on the importance of investigation of the lexically expressed negation types in Spanish, thus studying the semantic properties of some particular negating forms.
At the same time the article examines words containing negative semantics within their meaning as means of implicit negation. So, the lexically expressed negations and their compatibility with standard grammar negating markers are also being discussed.
The study is based on various scientific investigations of negation conducted by both Russian and Spanish linguists, and analyses different forms of lexical negation in these two languages, where some discrepancies are revealed and a compilation of examples is provided.
We consider in the first instance the relationship of negative words in Spanish with the process of negation, analyze their both grammatical and lexical value.
Apart from that, a group of Spanish and Russian lexical units has been selected to demonstrate realization of negative meaning irrespective of special grammar negators. Functional and combinatory properties of these units, the peculiarities of their usage and translation have been analyzed.
Thus the study revealed a number of specific features characterizing the process of realization of negative meanings in Spanish compared to Russian. The assignments for the further investigation have been set out.
