Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of studying the literary genre in the aspect of linguistic pragmatics. The study of the genre of a literary text from the standpoint of pragmatics is of particular relevance due to the possibility of analyzing well-known classical texts from the standpoint of identifying aspects of the impact on the consciousness and value picture of the world of the addressee. The pragmatic features of a particular artistic text of a certain genre are represented explicitly or implicitly, while the author assumes that the background knowledge of the reader will allow the addressee to decode his aesthetic statement correctly, in accordance with the artistic intent. The pragmatics of the short story genre, studied by us on the material of the literary text of S.A. Auslander’s «Valentine of Miss Belinda», reveals certain transformations in comparison with the stable genre features of the novel of the Renaissance or romanticism. During the study, it was concluded that in the short story of the Silver Age, there may be no novelistic «frame», through which the illusion of telling a story is created: on the contrary, the author can initiate a mystification of the fragmentation of the text, «torn out» from the context of such a narrative. There is no motivation for the actions of the heroes in the genre of the short story and in the short story of the Silver Age, in particular, which is explained by the narration on behalf of the narrator and his participation in the events, which prevents the hero from introspection. In the short story of the Silver Age, there are often no markers of authorial intentions and evaluativeness, as well as a certain moralistic conclusion in which such markers can be represented in a concentrated manner. Unexpected plot moves, on which the pragmatics of the novel in general is based, in the novels of the Silver Age emphasize only the emotional reaction of the character to events, but not the unforeseen events themselves. The practical significance of the study is the possibility of applying its results in teaching university courses on the theory of language, linguopragmatics, on the problems of genre’s theory, linguostylistics, and philological analysis of a literary text.
