Abstract. This article deals with the concept of evaluation and provides a comparative analysis of the language means of expressing evaluation in English and Russian headlines of newspaper articles. The press occupies one of the most important places in the cultural and political life of the country, helping people navigate the surrounding reality. An integral part of newspaper publications is the headline, because readers pay attention to it first of all. Evaluation tools in the language are the basis for characterizing the language of Newspapers. And the content of language means of expressing evaluation significantly increases the effectiveness of its impact on the reader. In the course of our analysis, we used the following methods: scientific literature analysis, continuous sampling method, and comparative method. After analyzing 50 newspaper headlines (based on the material of the Russian newspaper and the Guardian newspaper) by the ways of expressing the estimated value, we came to the conclusion that 60 % of English and 52 % of Russian headlines have a lexical level of evaluation. 9 % of English and 12 % of Russian headlines contain a stylistic rating, i.e. the rating is expressed using metaphors, Proverbs, etc. At the word-formation level, the score can be expressed using various suffixes and prefixes. This method of expressing the estimated value is used in English headings in 22 % of cases, while in Russian headings it is found only in 14 %. The graphic level of the evaluation expression is the least frequent in English and Russian.
