Abstract. The article deals with the socio-cultural phenomenon of childhood in the aspect of its transformation in modern society. In the course of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that in modern society there is a tendency to «barbarization» of culture. These changes are the result of the General crisis of humanistic culture, and, as a consequence, the growth of the psychology of mass consumption. The analysis of the historical formation of the socio-cultural phenomenon of childhood and the traditions of its interpretation in the visual arts showed that the standards of humanistic attitude to the world of childhood were laid XIX–XX Centuries. Thus, the child was the main character on the canvases of artists-Wanderers Vasily Perov, Valentin Serov, Ilya Repin and Boris Kustodiev, etc. Artists raise the theme of hardships and hardships that are inherent in children from the poorest strata of society. The artists thus called on the audience to show sympathy and compassion – as the most important humanistic values.
The tradition of careful attitude to the world of childhood was picked up by Soviet artists and representatives of creative professions. In Soviet animation and feature films for children remain the highest ideals of humanistic education of the younger generations. As the crisis of humanism deepens, we see the devaluation of the world of childhood, the transition from the understanding of the child as a subject of harmonious education to the object of destruction. As a result of comparative analysis using the method of phenomenological sociology A. The authors come to the conclusion that the topos of childhood in modern culture is devalued: the child from the object of care and protection of adults has become an object of consumption. The trend towards the barbarism of cultur.
