German loanwords in English in cognitive discursive aspect

Abstract. Replenishment aspects of English language through borrowings were actively studied diachronically, but English was often analyzed as a donor language by means of a cognitive paradigm shift. This article focuses on issue of developing neoconcepts and transformation of existing concepts in modern English under the influence of German language; relevance of the work stems from insufficient coverage of the functioning of germanisms in modern sources, though German brought wide range of lexical units English vocabulary and now continues to influence on renewing processes of sphere of concepts. This fact is explained by resemblance of civilizational type of cognitive identity of linguistic culture, and also genealogical and structural affinity and word formation systems of these languages.

The article discusses the views of researchers on the issue from the point of view of neology, cognitive and discursive linguistics, functional-semantic approach; special attention is given to the thematic groups of German borrowings the article deals with the correlation between cultural stereotypes and lacunae eliminated by borrowing.

The authors focus on the socio-cultural and discursive aspects of interaction between the conceptual views of the world of German- and English-speaking (British and American) linguistic cultures and their linguistic actualization on the example of the concepts Wanderlust and Angst. Based on the comparison of dictionary definitions and cognitive-discursive analysis of word usage, the paper compares cognitive models in the British and American versions based on borrowed lexemes. Describing the interaction of mental spaces in different linguistic cultures, including on the basis of secondary borrowing through English – from the German philosophical metaphor Lebensreise (life as a journey) to the description of the need to change places as one of the features of modern society, the authors come to the conclusion about the global nature of the concept Wanderlust, and also note its transformational potential.
