Abstract. This article is devoted to the justification and primary empirical testing of the hypothesis about the significant role of values in the dynamics of protest moods of young people. The dynamics of young people’s protest moods appeared in Russia after a series of actively discussed protest actions that took place in 2017. And now this interest remains strong. However, the most common research practice often leads only to the analysis of the dependence between protest moods of young people and external factors: fluctuations in socio-economic development or the political context. Basing on the experience of previous studies, the author assumes that the protest moods of young people may depend not only on such external factors, but also on those beliefs and attitudes of young people themselves. So, the key idea of the article is that protest moods of young people can be influenced by their values. The author submits this hypothesis to a primary test on the data of his own pilot sociological survey conducted among the youth of Yekaterinburg in the winter of 2018–2019. The data of this survey has shown, that the influence of values on the protest moods of young people may exist, but its role in the dynamics of such moods can be quite specific. Values play an important role in providing young people with basic discontent about how things are going in society. The data shows, that feeling of value imperfection of society is familiar for many young people. This feeling of value imperfection forms a dissatisfaction about society among many young people. But the irritation of young people arising on this basis does not always lead to the real increase of their protest moods. It is most likely that the factor of values of young people has a great influence on the formation of the basic discontent of young people about the current situation in society. But the conversion of this discontent into protest moods is influenced by a more complex system of factors. So, the research allowed the author to clarify the initial hypothesis about the role of values in the dynamics of protest sentiments of young people.
