Abstract. Social networks have become firmly embedded in the life of modern man. The article deals with the problem of philosophical understanding of the role and place of social networks in the life of society, their influence on the formation of personality. Is it possible to use the tools of already existing philosophical and ethical practices or is it necessary to create a new ethical structure for the analysis of information technologies of the XXI century — this is one of the main questions of the proposed reasoning.
Among the existing research areas, the following can be distinguished: intercultural information ethics, analysis of user behavior in social networks and the development of automatic intelligent services for users, management and other social sciences.
Media can be characterized as artifacts, the main function of which is to expand the empirical and cognitive horizons of the individual, otherwise a person would be limited only to using his own experience.
In addition, there are other mass media: these are paintings, sculptures and theatrical performances. However, they are static, while media technologies are capable of generating similar, dynamic phenomena.
When researching media, social sciences focus primarily on the impact of social networks on those areas of human activity that can be assessed based on specific experimental data. Philosophical problems of interaction between social networks and ethics are less amenable to empirical measurement, which creates certain difficulties.
Important problems that can be solved with the help of a philosophical approach can also include always relevant issues of confidentiality of information, restrictions on access to information or contextual integrity.
Thus, the technologies of social networks open up a new type of ethical space, for the comprehension of which it is necessary to develop new research techniques and methods.
