The ratio of the concepts of «tolerance» and «tolerance» in the minds of Russian society

Abstract. The article is an analysis of the content of the terms «tolerance» and «tolerance.» The similarities and differences of these concepts are examined, and the multi-aspect of the phenomenon of tolerance is explored. The article emphasizes that tolerance characterizes the social level of human relations, represents the norm of a civilized compromise between competing cultures, shows readiness for accepting differing views, acting as a condition for preserving diversity, dissimilarity. The key issues of understanding tolerance in Russia are considered. Because of the fundamental differences in the etymological definitions of tolerance and tolerance, it seems impossible to consider tolerance as an optimal means of regulating state-religious, inter-confessional and inter-ethnic relations in Russian society. Due to the peculiarities of national and cultural development, the author considers tolerance as the more widely used and universal definition.
