Abstract. Speech behavior, in its entirety and various aspects, along with diverse forms of speech actions performed under a range of communicative conditions, are subjects of active study by linguists. However, a detailed analysis of individual tactics within the emotionally dispositive strategy of Russian speech remains unexplored. This study attempts to investigate a specific speech tactic that can influence the emotional state of the communicant — the tactic of appealing to pity — within the context of an increasingly prevalent discourse — media discourse.

The author, based on media dialogues from Russian television interviews, examines the tactic of appeal to pity used by both the interviewer and interviewee, each with distinct speech goals. The article delineates the specifics, effectiveness, and speech means of implementing the tactic, with particular emphasis on speech tactics-responses to appeals to pity.

The author concludes that the tactic of appealing to pity can serve as a response to provocative speech acts and can also possess a provocative nature. However, the recipient of the tactic of appealing to pity does not always succeed in establishing the anticipated emotional backdrop of communication and achieving their communicative goal. The success of the tactic of appealing to pity is contingent upon the specific speech situation, the motives of the participants in communication, and the variations in the interpretations of the complex emotional concept of «pity» by the sender and recipient of the tactic.

This article is the outcome of an analysis conducted as part of a dissertation research focused on the speech implementation of an emotionally dispositive speech strategy in media discourse. It may prove beneficial to researchers studying speech behavior and media discourse, as well as anyone interested in the processes and tactics of emotional mood in communication.
