Abstract. The article deals with the sintesi of the Italian Futurists regarding them as an example of the new, avant-garde mode of playwriting that transformed the classical play construction and led to the creation of the theatre of the absurd and the contemporary postdramatic theatre. The research helps to trace the origins of these transformations and to highlight the key categories that avant-garde and contemporary directors are working with. The Italian Futurists started their theatre activity with the «serate», performative shows that allowed to destroy the traditionally passive role of the audience. The manifests «Variety Theatre» and «The Synthetic Futurist Theatre» exposed the theoretical basis for the transformation of the classical theatre. The priority was given to the dynamics, the absence of logics, the destruction of conventional values and the impact on the viewer with all the possible means. The Futurists introduced a new theatrical form called «sintesi» (synthesis) based on the dynamics, compression and unexpectedness of action. The author studies the sintesi by F.T. Marinetti, U. Boccioni, F. Cangiullo, G. Balla and others published in «Teatro Futurista Sintetico» (Synthetic Futurist Theatre) in 1921 and highlights the main traits that characterize the genre. It is the maximum reduction of dramatic means of expression, the expulsion off the stage of the traditional elements of a play (the introduction, development and conclusion), the transformation of the actor’s role and the introduction of inanimate objects as characters as well as the modification of language that ceases to bear the meaning. The sintesi of different authors often were very different, and they were presented to the public one after another during the futurist serata, creating the effect of collage similar to the one in the variety theatre. Looking at the sintesi analyzed one can see how the avant-garde theatre transforms the actor and makes the dominant role of the text disappear, creating instead a situation in which both the characters and the public are equally involved.
