Abstract. The article examines the ideas of Yekaterinburg residents’ about the image of Russia in modern domestic cinema. In modern conditions, the primary task of the state is the creation of a national state ideology, the increase of heightened self-awareness and the international consolidation of Russian society. The mass media are becoming a widespread practice of spreading state ideology in the post-industrial world. Cinema place a special role in this process.
The article examines the ideas of Yekaterinburg residents’ about the image of Russia in modern domestic cinema. The study was conducted in 2022 in Yekaterinburg. An online survey was conducted among residents of Yekaterinburg (n = 600); an in-depth interview was conducted (n = 10). Film critics and directors from the city of Yekaterinburg acted as informants.
The study has fixed that the image of Russia is replete with well-established negative stereotypes about the country. The residents of Yekaterinburg, to a great extent, notes that the image of the country is created in the cinema as following: a poor country, a country of corruption, criminal and cruel. At the same time, the respondents fix Russia as a strong, great, powerful country, etc. They would like to see such an image of the country in the national cinema. In this situation one can see one of the contradictions between the desired image of Russia in the public opinion of Yekaterinburg residents and that broadcast by domestic cinema.
Mean wile, in today’s conditions a lot of propaganda and patriotic films are being created in Russia that show the successes of the country during the Great Patriotic War, in sports, in science. These films are as follows: «Upward Movement», «Ice», «Salute 7», «Legend 17». Such cinematography was originally designed to create a positive image of Russia. But in the end, the main dominants or characteristics of Russia’s image as dullness (29.4 %), cruelty (14.4 %), corruption (12.3 %), poverty (25.1 %), etc. are formed in public opinion.
