Abstract. The paper is devoted to descriptive experiment in terms of a relatively new field in comparative philology — contrastive linguistics. Its results can also be reflected in the aspect of anthropological linguistics. Since the subject of the research work is the German realias, considered in the socio-cultural direction, as lexical units of the word imaging in the linguistic consciousness of a person. A system-cognitive perspective makes it possible to consider the realias through the lens of the linguistic world-image and knowledge about it.

It is aimed at analyzing the peculiarities of national semantics of some ethnographic German realias and to establish why students translate some realias without difficulty, while other — find it difficult to give a possible language analogue. According to the condition of the analysis, almost all the proposed realias are absolute non-equivalent, that is, absolute realias. The digital results obtained during the contrastive analysis showed the level of language contrast in the mind of the Russian-speaking student when interpreting the desired units.

It is established that the selection of an adequate meaning for a loan-word directly depends on the students’ understanding of the linguistic view of the world, including at the cognitive level. Therefore, for the correct interpretation and translation of realias, students justify the importance of their background knowledge about the culture and history of the language they are studying.
