Abstract. The article discusses the specifics of the functioning of slang lexical units and the features of the realization of their conflict potential in the texts of the media discourse. The authors have investigated the phenomenon of penetration and actualization of prison-camp jargon «lawlessness» in the media text, which is the result of actual transformations of linguistic reality and testifies to the large-scale and comprehensive processes of dysphemization and jargonization of speech practices of the Russian language collective. Slang vocabulary penetrates into those areas of language use where its use is initially inappropriate, which contributes to the «democratization» of speech. The use of slang vocabulary is beginning to be perceived by ordinary native speakers of the Russian language as the norm. A stable association with the marginal world of crime becomes a normal, integral part of everyday word usage. Media discourse, being a model of language use for most native speakers, at the same time reflects the current state of the language system and speech practices. Characterized by brightness, capacity, emotional coloring, jargonism is able to perform the function of evaluation and social regulation. Slang vocabulary contributes to the actualization of the emotional component of communication, verbalization of categorical rejection of the described event, explication of a negative assessment of a person or phenomenon and, thus, has the ability to create a conflictogenic text. The pragmatic interpretation of the jargon used in the media discourse allows us to assess their conflict potential. Having a conflictogenic potential, jargonism promotes social communication and the consolidation of socially significant meanings. The study provides examples of the use of one slang lexeme with both negative and positive connotations, which allows us to conclude about the conceptualization of jargonism and a change in the axiological system of the modern language collective.
