Characteristics and trends of popular culture in the Russian context

Abstract. In modern Russia, mass culture is an irreversible process of destruction of traditional worldviews and the emergence of innovative, global transformations observed in the field of morality. The purpose of this work is to identify the characteristics of mass culture characteristic for our country, as well as actual trends in this environment. Mass culture is credited with dividing by ranks from «low» to «high», but today there is a tendency to erase these facets. It acts as an important element of the system of education, socialization, upbringing. The population aspires to be involved in significant components of culture, to co-author cultural trends. Mass culture in today’s Russia is devoid of individuality. Representations of gender roles and images are distorted. The audience that consumes the mass culture takes wishful thinking. There is a lack of selectivity of information, which leads to the absorption of information debris.
