Social aspects of the Eid al-Adha holiday in Russia

Abstract. The purpose of this article is to identify and describe the social aspects of the Eid al-Adha holiday in Russia. The study is based on sociological surveys and the opinions of religious and government officials regarding the number of Muslims in Russia. The author also refers to the works of major foreign cultural scientists, religious scholars and sociologists, as well as mythological and religious sources, in particular the Muslim holy scriptures, which lay the foundation for the Eid al-Adha holiday. At the very beginning of the study, the importance of this study is emphasized, based on statistical data, according to which the number of Muslims in Russia is steadily growing. The author gives a definition of the Eid al-Adha holiday, emphasizes its importance for Muslims in Russia and the world, considers the etymology of the name of the holiday, and analyzes the phenomenon of sacrifice, based on the research of famous cultural scientists, religious scholars and sociologists. The main part of the article examines the issue related to the practice of human sacrifice, widespread in ancient times, and the mythological and religious stories that became the basis for their rejection and replacement with other types of sacrifices. The author focuses on the Koranic story of the sacrifice of the prophet Ibrahim, which had a key influence on the emergence of the holiday of Eid al-Adha. The author defines the essence of the holiday, as well as its regional and religious specificity within Russia. Finally, the author identifies six social aspects of the holiday of Eid al-Adha in Russia and gives them a detailed description. In the final part of the article, the author concludes on the significance of this holiday for the society of Russian Muslims.
