Abstract. The article analyzes the characteristic features of the activities of sects as certain stable social groups with a spiritual leader and a well-developed hierarchical system.: They convey ideological attitudes that are fundamentally different from the views of the public majority. This problem seems to be relevant because, according to a number of government officials, as well as political scientists, sociologists, and scientists of other humanitarian backgrounds, modern sects deliberately encroach on traditional spiritual and moral values in combination with the cultivation of abusive relationships.

The authors attempt to approach the understanding of national identity through the attitude of the population towards the sect and sectarianism. In this regard, the authors have proposed a list of features that make it possible to classify the organization’s activities as a sect. In particular, the paper provides examples of manipulative resources on the part of recruiters, as well as a complete algorithm for monitoring new members of the sect.

In the course of analyzing the contradiction between sectarianism or, conversely, being rooted in traditional moral postulates, the authors of the article use a scheme that allows them to consider it in multiple ways (the attitude of the country’s population towards sectarianism, the position of traditional religion towards sectarianism, etc.).

The research materials are presented not only in the form of Russian classical literature, a number of scientific publications, but also in documents of a regulatory nature (including Reviews of judicial statistics of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, a resolution of the Plenum of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, a number of articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), which once again underlines the attitude of state authorities towards the activities of destructive sects. character.
