Abstract. The results of a theoretical study related to issues that consider the socio-cultural mechanisms of the phenomenon of «aggression – sacrifice» are described. The author believes that aggression and sacrifice are two interrelated parties of destructive behavior, the origins of the fusion of which are found both in fundamental research of modern science and in the ideas of the Orthodox religion. The article examines the social attitude to the ethos of sacrifice from the point of view of Russian cultural conditioning. The priorities of nonviolence, conscientiousness, pity, compassion are gradually replaced by the ethics of humility, patience, non-resistance, passivity, transient in extreme manifestations to self-torture, where the person with the image of the sufferer, the victim is proclaimed a messiah, called to bring to the world higher knowledge and absolute ideas. In the context of Russian culture, the ideas of transparency of the semantic fields of aggression and sacrifice are articulated, represented in social practices as the resolution of violence through hypertrophied sacrifice, reaching the grotesque forms of foolishness, chiliastic aspirations and the tyranny of the powers that be. In Russian culture, the ideas of aggression, violence, cruelty were manifested through sacrifice. Passivity, self-abuse are not alternatives to violence. Only active nonviolence is a constructive expression of strength, which is stronger than violence. Sacrifice also expresses the position of a person who has not yet «grown» to violence, but necessarily before it «grows». Aggression and sacrifice act as addictive aspects of a single social archetype, influencing the development of the mentality of the Russian people. The aggressive-sacrificial mode of behavior is an archetype of national self-consciousness, modeling the deep stencils of social behavior.

Keywords: binary semantic oppositions; cultural representations; socio-cultural mechanisms of construction; destructive identity; the phenomenon of «aggressive – sacrifice»; a social archetype; mentality; victimization
