Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of recursion as one of the fundamental mechanisms of natural language organization, which enables the infinite generation of grammatically correct utterances based on a limited number of linguistic rules. Special attention is paid to the study of verbal fractals and nested syntax as forms of manifestation of the recursive principle at various levels of the language system. The theoretical foundations of the concept of recursion, the history of the development of this field in domestic and foreign linguistics, as well as modern scientific approaches to understanding the self‑similarity of linguistic structures are considered. The views of N. Chomsky, M. Hauser, W.T. Fitch, D. Everett, L.S. Vygotsky, and other researchers who have made a significant contribution to the study of the recursive nature of language and the cognitive mechanisms of speech activity are analyzed.
The paper reveals the content of the concepts of «verbal fractal» and «matryoshka syntax», and shows their connection with the principles of self‑organization of language.
Keywords: syntax; verbal fractal; matryoshka syntax; recursion; cognitive linguistics; language
