Expressing feminist terminology in the English and Russian languages

Abstract. The article analyses and compares the feminism terminology in English and Russian, which allows identifying similar and different approaches to expressing the ideas of feminism in two different cultural contexts. This theme is not only a language problem, but also a reflection of deep socio-cultural transformations regarding gender roles, equality and public perception of gender issues. The main aim of the work is to explore how language can serve as a tool for expression and identity formation in the context of feminism, and how these ideas are transferred across linguistic and cultural boundaries. The attention is focused on the theoretical substantiation, the history of studying the issue, revealing three waves of feminism, which indicates a constant evolutionary process, including changes in the terminology used to express feminist ideas. The paper emphasises that analysing key terms actively used in feminist discussions in English and Russian contributes to deeper conception of linguistic dynamics in forming and transforming feminist concepts. The conducted social survey allows drawing conclusions about deeper penetration of English-language terms into the Russian-language discussion of gender issues. Almost all survey participants admitted that the Russian-language terminology of feminism is largely adapted from the English language, which indicates the global nature of the feminist movement and the universality of its values. The conclusion is made about the abundance of feminist discourse in the society as an integral part of the linguistic and cultural context and an active interest in gender equality issues. Research in this area will continue to advance the language of feminism and deepen the debates about the equality across cultural and linguistic communities.
