Abstract. In the article, the main object of research is the fukoltian category of heterotopy, considered in its broad and narrow – more empirically productive – meaning. Foucault himself heterotopy was defined only «framework», they have not developed a consistent theory of spaces. Perhaps Foucault only outlined the future possible territory of socio-philosophical research, the object of which could be the structure, functions, interpretation of locations. The use of the concept of heterotopia in a narrow sense relies on the idea of a singularity, indicating the exceptional status of some topos within the social world; these locations are the image or quintessence of certain social mechanisms, sometimes of its very foundations. This article focuses primarily on the images of heterotopy exclusion as fully embodying the narrow meaning of the concept and reflecting Foucault’s initial message about the relationship between society and the subject. The heterotopia of exclusion is the space in which the subjectivation and resubjectivation of a person and the objectification of social regulations occur in a variety of practices that appeal to the withdrawal, restriction, management of the behavior of individuals. At the same time, exclusion heterotopia may be a temporary haven, a place of visit, but it always maintains its isolation and specific exclusivity. This is not just a place different from other places, it is a place where the concepts of control and order, the norm, the simplified structure of the social world that prevail within a given epoch or another, are implemented at the critical maximum point.

Travel literature as a field of texts enchanted with spaces seems to be fertile material for a dialogue about locations loaded with stable social meanings, locations that are special compared to many other places that implicitly embody, model and reproduce certain foundations of sociality. The possibility of using the concept of heterotopia for the critical interpretation of a literary text was investigated on the material of the “Italian Journey” by I.V. Goethe and the “Letters of the Russian Traveler” by N.I. Karamzin. In the process of analysis, the main object of attention was the image in the named texts of exception heterotopies.
