Abstract. Current humanities display an increasing interest in analysis of concepts, i.g. words, reflecting experience of generations and cultural identity. Concepts are cultural units and keys for cultural understanding. Identifying the basic concepts is the key for understanding the worldview of the society. The concept Sympathy can be considered as one of the basic concepts of any culture. Studying the phenomenon of sympathy as a concept reflecting experience of generations and cultural identity seems to be more detailed and precise one. The complex description of the concept is multidisciplinary as it refers to cultural philosophy, anthropology, linguistics and psychology. Studying the phenomenon of sympathy is multidisciplinary from ancient times. Resuming knowledge of sympathy displays its psychological and ideological importance. The article is dedicated to complete description of sympathy as the phenomenon of human philosophical life. The purpose of the article is to analyze interpretations of sympathy in philosophy, figure out basic conceptual features reflecting different approaches in the history of western philosophy.
