Abstract. The article is devoted to the origin and development of English-language maritime terminology. The conducted study of English-language maritime terminology confirms its key role in international communication, ensuring safety and efficiency of the maritime industry. Due to the global nature of the maritime sphere, English serves as the main means of communication, which emphasizes the importance of correct interpretation and use of specialized vocabulary. Clarity and accuracy of definitions of maritime terms are crucial for compliance with safety standards on board ships and avoiding accidents. Diachronic analysis shows that maritime terminology has undergone significant changes under the influence of historical events, interlingual contacts and technological development. Borrowings from other languages indicate close cultural and trade ties between states. The article shows that technical innovations in the maritime industry also led to the emergence of new maritime terms. At the same time, an equally significant factor in the development of English-language maritime terminology is its standardization, carried out by international organizations, the main one of which is the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and contributing to the harmonization of modern practices of using maritime terminology to ensure efficient and safe communication at sea. The article shows that the study of English-language maritime terminology has practical significance, including in the training of future specialists, since understanding the historical aspects of the development of the terminology system and its adaptation to modern conditions allows for a deeper understanding of the structure and functions of the English language and the effective use of modern terms in accordance with current needs.
