The author studies the basic laws of the formation of such expressions and identifies their structural features. A interlanguage comparative analysis of idiomatic expressions is carried out by comparing their content and form. The material for the analysis was the phraseological foundation of the main European languages, primarily French, English and German. Idiomatic expressions, or, in other words, phraseological units, are defined as stable phrases with independent semantics. Their most important feature is the impossibility of dismembering the whole into its component parts, since the meaning of the phraseological unit is not derived from the meaning of the words contained in it. In this article, the author focused only on those idiomatic expressions, which include ethnonyms (names of nationalities) and toponyms (names of geographic objects).

Keywords: idiomatic expressions; idioms; idioms; toponyms; ethnonyms; oikonyms; buried; urbanonyms; European languages

Lyadskiy Vladimir Georgievich Institute of world civilizations, Moscow, Russia Lomonosov Moscow state university, Moscow, Russia E-mail: ladski_v@mail.ru Abstract.
