The relevance of this study is determined by the need to study the linguistic specifics of the dichotomy and its influence on public opinion during the escalation of the war. The aim of the work is to identification of characteristic lexical units and expressive means that actualize the categories of «friend» and «enemy». Article objectives: determine the specifics of the dichotomy in the media space; systematize the linguistic and syntactic expressive means that verbalize this dichotomy; study the influence of the dichotomy on the formation of the media concept of the «Vietnam War». Research material: 100 articles on the Second Indochina War from the Izvestia newspaper in 1965 (by 1965, the war had been going on for 10 years, leading to the formation of recognizable categories of «friend» (those who opposed the war) and «enemy» (those who supported the war) in the Soviet media). The results of discourse analysis, sociolinguistic analysis, complex analysis, etc. are presented, allowing us to identify the nominations of the categories of «friend» and «enemy». It has been proven that the «friend-enemy» dichotomy is verbalized through evaluative, social, and political oppositions. The authors conclude that the analyzed linguistic means shape recipients’ perceptions of the USSR’s political allies and adversaries, verbalize ideas of socialism and anti-imperialism, and convince readers that the Second Indochina War was yet another conflict initiated by the United States to gain political and economic influence in the region.

Keywords: media linguistics; political discourse; media concept; dichotomy; friend; enemy; Vietnam War

Lonskaia Anna Yuryevna Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Moscow, Russia E-mail: daligalia@yandex.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4594-2571 RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=935015 Mitsoumbou Dzinga Adelaide Olivia Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba, Moscow, Russia E-mail: olivmitsh@yandex.com ORCID: https://orcid.org/0009-0008-5793-8952 RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=1345689 Abstract.
