This article analyses the existing translation correspondences of the term «plaintiff» in English and Spanish and classifies them on legal and linguistic grounds. Legal grounds include the type of legal system, category of case, subcategory of case, type of court hearing the case and jurisdiction. Linguistic grounds include morphological structure, pragmatic function, semantic meaning and type of translation correspondence. The author analyses the legal acts of several Anglo-Saxon countries (Australia, Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States of America) as well as the Kingdom of Spain for the presence of terms denoting the plaintiff in civil proceedings and terms denoting the victim of a crime in criminal proceedings. Based on the data obtained from the above analysis, the author has compiled charts showing the frequency of use of terms in civil and criminal proceedings and their percentages to identify the most used terms. In addition, the article contains a table containing translation variants of the term «plaintiff» and the frequency of their use in the civil and criminal codes of Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. This table is also accompanied by charts on the frequency of use of terms in both types of proceedings and the number of terminological synonyms. The author focuses on how the geographical location of Latin American countries affects their propensity to use certain plaintiff terms. This article is of interest to legal practitioners, linguists, translators and students.

Keywords: complainant; translation correspondences; translation equivalents; classification of translation correspondences; legal grounds; linguistic grounds; victim of crime; frequency of use of the term; Latin American countries; Anglo-Saxon countries

Valiullina Iliana Faritovna Ufa, Russia E-mail: elyana-valiulina@mail.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0009-0009-2380-5155 Abstract.
