Based on the characteristics of the characters, the author attempted to reconstruct the political reality of Russia in the 1870s (this is the time when the novel takes place) and compare it with modern reality. The analysis of the characters of the work is considered as a procedure for identifying the main factors that determine the logic of the actions of the main characters of the novel, by studying the political processes and phenomena of the 19th century from the standpoint of symbolism.

In his work, Leo Tolstoy raises problems of a socio-philosophical nature that are relevant to this day, and in a modern interpretation they are reflected in the field of cinema and theater arts, in which political meanings can also be captured.

The purpose of the study is aimed at identifying the key political aspects of the novel, based on which it is possible to assess the degree of politicization of the work. To achieve the stated goal, the following tasks were formulated: to analyze the theoretical base, which presents expert opinions of literary scholars, historians and political scientists on the issues under study; to study the autograph (manuscript) of the novel and get acquainted with the original intentions of the narrator; to consider the images of the characters in the context of comparative analysis and from the point of view of political science; to identify the criteria for comparing the «political environment» of society in the 19th and 21st centuries. Drawing conclusions and summarizing the above, the author comes to the conclusion that the political component is certainly present in the novel and manifests itself in the interaction of the main characters, and is also an epiphenomenon of the work.

Keywords: Anna Karenina; Alexey Alexandrovich; freedom; power; happiness; reforms; novel; statehood; family

Vasil’chenko Tat’yana Ivanovna Federal State University of Education, Moscow, Russia E-mail: tatanavasilcenko2168@gmail.com Academic adviser: Leskova Irina Valeryevna Federal State University of Education, Moscow, Russia E-mail: leskova.i@yandex.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6083-6692 RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=510760 WoS: https://www.webofscience.com/wos/author/rid/AAC-8948-2020 SCOPUS: https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.url?authorId=56610215200 Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.ru/citations?user=BfYOFYMAAAAJ Abstract.
