Causative situations modelled by the predicate force are considered in accordance with the postulate that the mode is a diathetic shift, which implies changes at the level of syntactic actants. The author follows the predicate-argument approach to the study of predicate semantics. The parameters of the communicative structure of a causative situation depend on the semantic roles of the participants of the situation, i.e. on the status of the main arguments. The main arguments of a causative situation are the causee and the causer. The fundamental difference between the use of the verb force in the active mode and the use of the same verb in the passive mode lies in the heterogeneous interpretation of the event. In the active, the interpretation occurs from the perspective of the causer, while in the passive it occurs from the perspective of the causee. The status of the causee in the communicative structure of any causative situation in passive analytic constructions is «syntactically prioritised argument». The status of the causer depends on the properties of agentivity and formal explication in the syntactic structure of the sentence. In the full passive, the agentive causer always has the status of «argument with reduced syntactic priority». In the incomplete passive, the status of the agentive causative is downgraded to «syntactically non-prioritised argument». «Background» non-agentive causer also has the status «syntactically unidentifiable argument». In causative situations where the source of the causative influence is not known and cannot be identified, the status of the causer is «syntactically unidentifiable argument». The diathetic shift in combination with semantic-syntactic features of arguments determines the variation of the taxonomic category of the verb force — «causative occurrence», «perfective state» or «esperiential state».

Keywords: predicate; causative situation; diathetic shift; taxonomic category; argument; semantic role

Baklagova Julia Viktorovna Kuban State University, Krasnodar, Russia E-mail: liliann@mail.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3334-8962 RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=267484 Abstract.
