The article provides an interpretation of the category of expressiveness within the framework of the linguistic-stylistic approach and highlights the constituent elements: emotivity, intensity, evaluation and imagery. The research touches upon the issues of interpretation of the concept of «imagery» and focuses on the definition of imagery as a combination of the features of various stylistic varieties of the literary form of the national language and its non-literary forms possessing expressive potential (tropes, periphrases, irony, allegory, sarcasm, grotesque, stylistic figures, rhetorical units, various techniques of language play, etc.) at all levels of the language (phonetic, lexical, morphological, syntactic, semantic).
The authors analyze the text of a short story by American writer Edith Wharton (the world’s first female writer winner of the Pulitzer Prize) for manifestations of expressiveness at different levels of the English language. When analyzing the text, the method of continuous sampling was used. The researchers make an overview of the stylistically marked vocabulary, syntactic constructions, phonetic means used by the author E. Wharton to convey the descriptive characteristics of the characters, the atmosphere of the narrative, the development of the storyline, etc. They highlight neutral linguistic units endowed with the potential of expressiveness in the context of the work. It is confirmed that expressiveness is a key characteristic of a literary text. The article concludes that in addition to special linguistic means (emotive, figurative, stylistically marked), any neutral unit of language can be expressive, depending on the author’s goals.

Keywords: expressiveness; imagery; expressive means of language; language units; tropes; alliteration; onomatopoeia; syntax

Davydova Irina Viktorovna Industrial University of Tyumen, Tyumen, Russia E-mail: Davirina71@yandex.ru Prudchenko Elena Alexandrovna Industrial University of Tyumen, Tyumen, Russia E-mail: prudchenkoea@tyuiu.ru Makasheva Saltanat Zholdasbekovna Industrial University of Tyumen, Tyumen, Russia E-mail: makascheva@mail.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4131-0967 RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=374493 Abstract.
