Discourse markers are a class of auxiliary communicative units with unique formal and pragmatic possibilities, high frequency of use and transcategorial character. Discourse markers as prototypical constructs have a great functional potential actualized in the context. The only criterion for distinguishing these units is functional and pragmatic. The discourse markers are characterized by semantic diffusion, so every potential meaning will be actualized in the context. This article presents in a comparative aspect the specific pragmatic functions of discourse markers, which are actualized in the professional discourse of mediation and in everyday discourse. Taking into account the principle of confidentiality in the mediator’s work, the authors use linguopragmatic and contextual analysis as methods of research. Mediation textbooks, fragments of negotiations from open sources, articles written by practicing mediators and speech fragments of professional mediators’ self-reflection serve as the material. The article also uses materials from the professional mediator’s self-reflection. The verification of neutral discourse markers takes place in the mediator’s self-reflection process and is assessed by the success of the negotiations: the authors analyze how professionally, impartially and effectively mediators use these or those markers. In translation of the marker well into the Russian language we obtain the versions, where there are restrictions related to the principle of mediator neutrality. The use of neutral discourse markers contributes to the success of negotiations and demonstrates the mediator’s professionalism.

Keywords: discourse markers; well; everyday communication; professional communication; mediation; pragmatic function; the English language; the Russian language

Kinderknekht Anna Sergeevna Perm State Agro-Technological University named after Academician D.N.
