Phraseological units help to understand better the culture and history of the people through the prism of the national language. It is impossible to comprehend the peculiarities of the national picture of the world without studying the human consciousness fixed in the language. The analysis of stable phrases with the component «animals» is important in terms of studying the linguistic picture of the world. The language preserves and transmits the culture of the people from generation to generation. A comparative analysis of unrelated and different-structured languages allows us to identify coincidences, discrepancies and features of the metaphorical use of pet names to characterize a person. The essence of proverbs can be understood by correlating them with certain qualities of a person, since proverbs are oriented to a person by their semantics. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the first attempt is being made to compare proverbs and sayings with the «animals» component of the Kalmyk and English languages. The subject of our research is animalistic proverbs and sayings of the Kalmyk and English languages. The image of an animal helps to create a vivid picture of human moral qualities. The use of animal images is different in the proverbs of the two ethnic groups, but semantic similarities are also revealed. According to their connotative properties, phraseological units are divided into positive and negative. Proverbs and sayings with a negative assessment prevail over positive ones. In Kalmyk proverbs, the names of mainly domestic animals are used. This is explained by the fact that the main economic activity of the Kalmyks was cattle breeding.

Keywords: phraseological units; animalism; ethnoculture; worldview; national identity; values; connotations; specific

Chedzhieva Zhanna Dzhalaevna Kalmyk State University named after B.B.
