Abstract.<\/strong> The article is devoted to the study of the evaluation category in English. The purpose of the work is to present the ways of expressing a negative assessment in English\u2013language discourse. To achieve the goal, the following tasks were set: (1) to study the problem of discourse in modern science; (2) to consider the category of evaluation in linguistics; (3) to substantiate explicit and implicit ways of expressing negative evaluation in English-language discourse. The authors study the role of discourse existing in all spheres of human activity in any form of utterance \u2014 written or oral. The article pays sufficient attention to the category of evaluation, which has a cognitive nature and represents the most significant form of reality representation. In the course of studying the identified problem, the term «discourse» is concretized, its typology is clarified, the concepts of «text» and «discourse» are distinguished. The paper also studies Russian and foreign theories of evaluation by E.M. Wolf, V.I. Karasik, V.V. Krasnykh, U. Cheif, G.M. Yavorskaya and other linguists, on the basis of whose works the category of «evaluation» in English-language discourse is considered. In the course of the research, the authors were particularly interested in the negative assessment in the English language, which led to the analysis of its classification in English-language discourse through the differentiation of explicit and implicit ways of expression. The results of the research can be used in the development of special courses on linguoculturological, communicative and pragmatic analysis of discourse and text stylistics, can be introduced into the practice of teaching universities courses in lexicology and stylistics of the English language, discourse theory.<\/p>\n
