It is proved that a literary text, having a symbolic form, is a priori oriented towards conventionality, which, in turn, correlates with fiction. Structural and semantic analysis of the functioning of an aesthetic sign in a literary text allows us to assert that for its adequate description, it is insufficient to distinguish the signs determined by semiotics \u2014 the results of sensory perception and signs \u2014 stages of rational-logical activity. When creating a literary text, the author combines the actual linguistic mechanisms and the mechanism of cognition, actualizing the signs of signs. An aesthetic sign must be true, at least for the author who uses such signs, which, however, does not allow one to qualify it as true or false in aesthetic communication. The representations that form the semantic space of a literary text are not related to the perception of an objectively existing reality, which makes it possible to substantiate the secondary semiosis of a literary text as the meaning of those representations that are created in the minds of the reader and the author by phenomena of reality or ideas. In the sense generally accepted in semiotics, the aesthetic sign has no denotation, because the reader perceives the author&#8217;s understanding of the world, which is not identical to objective reality. It is obvious that the fictitious reality and its objects are the denotation, and the artistic fiction itself is the structure-forming element of the aesthetic sign, which allows the interaction of the denotative, connotative and significative components.
