New words tend to appear as a reaction to some globally or nationally significant social, political, economic and cultural events. Lexical elements are most “sensitive” to external factors influencing the language, thus lexical changes reveal the tendencies in the language’s development.

The study is focused on analyzing the ways to verify new author-invented Russian words which are categorized as “protologisms”. The research contains a discussion on how protologisms and linguistic world view are related. There are reported the results of the linguistic experiment aimed to define how Russian-speaking natives verify the protologisms published on the website www.snob.ru within the “Word of the Year” project. To research the materials of the “Word of the Year” annual projects it is vital to study the socio-linguistic aspect. The researchers try to answer the question if author-invented words piercing the projects can be a source of data revealing the dynamics of the up-to-date Russian language and if new words make it possible to state current changes in the language that show the development of the language’s system.

One of the most important aims of the research is finding out how Russian-speaking natives verify protogisms.
