Phytonymical lexicon reflects the economic and cultural activities of the people, the value system of the national-linguistic and cultural community, its world view and world perception. The given article is devoted to the study of phytonyms of the English and Russian languages. The aim of the article is to identify and describe the motivation features of the phytonymical vocabulary of the English and Russian languages. The problem of identifying a motivation feature in the process of a «name» giving is studied in the framework of the theory of nomination. The author presents a classification of the selected phytonyms according to the following motivation features: «shape», «size», «colour», «smell», «characteristics of life activity», «taste», «sound», «place of growth», «nature of the surface», «purpose of the name», «flowering time», «warning», «aesthetic assessment», «assessment from the point of moral feelings», «named after». The research showed that such motivation feature as «form» is predominated in the compared languages. The phytonyms with the motivation feature «size» are not found among English phytonymic names. At the same time the phytonyms with the motivation features «assessment from the point of moral feelings», «named after» are not found among Russian phytonymic names. During the process of phytonyms nomination not only one, but also two features can be highlighted and emphasized. It makes it easier to recognize and remember the plant name, to distinguish it from the variety of other flora representatives. The diverse world of flora, being the object of human perception, manifests itself in different ways. The variety of motivation features only determines the potency of the name giving, but not the necessity. The actualization of a particular feature can be explained by the selectiveness of human perception. The results of the study may be used in the study of lexicology, cultural linguistics, onomastics, as well as in the compilation of terminological dictionaries.

Keywords: linguistic worldview; phytonymics; phytonym; motivation feature; motivation evaluation; distinctive feature; nomination; comparative aspect; productivity

Anikina Tatiana Vyacheslavovna Russian state vocational pedagogical university Nizhny Tagil state social pedagogical institute (branch), Nizhny Tagil, Russia E-mail: anikishna@mail.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2020-3054 РИНЦ: https://www.elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=629391 Abstract.
