The relevance of the research is due to the necessity to create common principles for the standardization of toponyms and to improve the rules of Russian spelling in terms of writing geographical names. The novelty of the research is the use of quantitative methods that give a more complete description of the phenomenon under study. The research material is the State catalogue of geographical names, current legal acts of the subjects of the Russian Federation, reference books of administrative division of different years of publication, topographic maps. The author presents in the article modern examples of toponyms with varying usage of o/e(ё) after hushing sounds and the letter ц. It was found that the largest number of variable toponyms is due to the spelling of the suffix -ов-/-ев- after the hushing sounds and the letter ц in Russian geographical names derived from surnames. It is noted that the standardization of toponyms is carried out both in accordance with the current rules of spelling, and in accordance with the established traditions of writing toponyms. The use of quantitative research methods allowed us to correlate the usual and normative spelling of toponyms derived from surnames with the suffix -ов-/-ев- after the hushing sounds and the letter ц. It is established that the highest percentage of cases of coincidence of the usual spelling of toponyms with the normative one is observed in toponyms with the stems ending in -ц, -ж, -ш, and the lowest one – in toponyms with the stems ending in -ч, -щ. It was found that the usual spelling of surnames has a strong influence on the spelling of toponyms derived from surnames. The author highlights the prospects and difficulties of the standardization of the toponyms in question and makes suggestions for improving the principles of standardization.

Keywords: toponym; Russian toponymy; standardization; toponymic variation; rules of spelling; spelling variation; usual spelling; normative spelling

Dambuev Igor Aleksandrovich Institute for mongolian, buddhist and tibetan studies of the Siberian branch of the Russian academy of sciences, Ulan-Ude, Russia E-mail: igor_dambuev@mail.ru Abstract.
