Joyce. The material under analysis includes the texts of seven stories from the book «A Snow Garden and Other Stories». The author’s view of the world is reflected in linguistic phenomena which are characteristic of idiostyle as a special way of expressing ideas and feelings. Therefore, the research objective was to describe the textual peculiarities of the stories within the structure of the writer’s idiostyle. Further on, the detected ways of indirect nomination highlighting metaphorization are discussed. At first, we thoroughly studied the texts to identify simile as a stylistic device; the cases of simile were analyzed from the point of view of their structure and functional traits. In the stories by Rachel Joyce simile is mainly introduced by the words like and as if. All the registered cases appear to be a productive way of creating the book characters, the necessary effects, thus enlivening any scene. The next step was describing the nature of the author’s individual metaphor and its relevance to building up the link between the author and the reader. This kind of metaphor is a result of the author’s artistic search and expresses her personal ideas and views of the situations her characters find themselves in. Joyce’s creative work itself is perceived through the metaphors typical of her fiction. As far as the structure is concerned, one can discover various metaphors, however, their most common structure is “subject-predicate”. Not only characters with their complicated inner world are subject to metaphorization, but inanimate objects and phenomena come to life in her stories as well. Summing up the results of the analysis, we can draw the conclusion concerning the multiplicity of the described stylistic devices in the works by R. Joyce which enables her to reveal subtleties of emotions and the evolution of the characters’ feelings.

Keywords: style; the author’s style; idiolect; simile; metaphorization; the author’s individual metaphor; the stylistic structure

Petrova Evgeniia Aleksandrovna Kursk state university, Kursk, Russia E-mail: evg20@bk.ru Petukhova Elena Vladimirovna Kursk state university, Kursk, Russia E-mail: petukhova.lena2015@yandex.ru Abstract.
