Abstract. Linguistic interest to a literary text as one of the main products of human communicative activity is determined by regarding language as a means of modelling reality. Analysing the meaning of a text is a priority for modern anthropologically focused linguistics.
From the point of view of frame theory, human experience is situational, which means that every problem that is verbally represented in a text can be described as a model having temporal and spatial characteristics.
M.M. Bakhtin’s theory of literary chronotope determines space and time as categories modelling the plot structure of a literary text and playing a key role in distinguishing genres.
Described in such a way, chronotope in a literary text is primarily different from chronotope in other genres.
The article contains an analysis of the narrative structure and linguistic features of the chronotope in K. Ishiguro’s “The Remains of the Day”. Frame analysis enables the authors of the article to prove that in the text under analysis chronotope performs an evaluative function by modelling the plot structure of the text. The plot structure is represented as a combination of two spatial and temporal planes separated by an evaluative frame. The frame serves as an evaluative filter for the reader of the text under analysis.
The role of the evaluative frame in the narrative structure of the text consists in specifying the key problem manifesting the meaning of K. Ishiguro’s “The Remains of the Day”.
Theoretical background of the linguistic analysis contained in the article is provided by K.A. Medvedkina’s PhD thesis (Belgorod, Russia, 2008).
