Abstract. Folklore is a rich material for research in the field of linguistics, ethnography, folklore and linguistic folklore. To express the imagery, the colorfulness of the language and the expressiveness of folk poetry, lexical and artistic and expressive means were used. In this article, we will consider lexical means when describing the image of a hero, his actions and surroundings in the Mansi heroic folklore. On the example of the heroic songs of the Mansi people, a certain classification of lexical figurative means is given: epithets, hyperbole, comparison, etc. The purpose of the article is to determine the specificity of the figurative systems that are used in the texts of Mansi heroic songs. The research material is the texts of heroic songs published in folklore collections.

The result of this study was the identification of the lexico-stylistic system, which shows a special folk-poetic expression. It is this that gives the text a certain expressiveness, attractiveness and originality. At the present stage of development of such sciences as linguistics and linguistic folklore, the problems of the language of folklore (heroic and military songs, epic monuments) in the typological (as well as in the comparative) sense deserve special attention. Since ancient times, the images of heroes-heroes have been a source of inspiration for works created by many domestic authors – writers, poets, artists, and now they are reflected in the culture of the people. The relevance of the study lies in the disclosure of the image of the hero as a national archetype in folklore.

The novelty of the work lies in the fact that the lexical means of the imagery of Mansi folklore are first considered on the material of heroic songs, previously they were studied only on the material of fairy tales and in the genres of children’s folklore (jokes, lullabies, little dogs, etc.).

Keywords: heroic songs; images; otyry; comparison; hyperbole; epithets; Mansi folklore
