Abstract. The study of the representation of the people’s worldview in the texts of oral folk art is an important area of research in Russian folklore studies. This article examines the figurative and metaphorical representation of the sun and the moon in Khanty riddles. It should be noted that this issue has not been studied in the context of Khanty riddles. The study is based on Khanty riddles about the sun and the moon, which have been published in collections of Khanty folk riddles. The purpose of this article is to identify the representations of the moon and the sun in the texts of riddles. To achieve this goal, the following tasks were solved: to examine riddles about the sun and the moon, to identify metaphors that actualize the representations of the celestial bodies, and to identify the mythological plots and elements of traditional culture that are recorded in the riddles. The following methods were used in the study: continuous sampling, semiotic analysis, comparative analysis, interpretative analysis, and descriptive methods. As a result, metaphors representing the objects were identified. In Khanty riddles, the sun is identified with a girl and a tree. The sun and the moon are identified with birds, brothers, husband and wife. The moon is identified with fire and a doll. Metaphors for the month include bread, a knife, a pike, and a shepherd. The author concludes that the riddles about the celestial bodies reflect the idea of the cosmos as a home, a space within a labaz, and актуализируют the idea of a vertical model of the world, the world tree, and refer to mythological stories about the creation of the earth.
