Abstract. In this article, a lexicographical portrait of the word «extreme» is formed based on the analysis of linguistic dictionaries of different types. The author pays attention to the theory of Yu.D. Apresyan on the integral description of lexemes, according to which lexicographic portraiture of a word is formed from three components: semantic-pragmatic representation; communicative-prosodic, combinable, syntactic, morphological and stylistic description; data on the semantic relations of the values of the studied lexical unit with other values in the dictionary, which determined the structure of this scientific study. In this paper, lexicographical portraiture of the lexeme «extreme» is based on the identification and description of a complex of properties of all lexical meanings of the word under study, as well as a complex characteristic of the lexeme in word-formation, stylistic, grammatical, etymological, syntactic, phraseological, pragmatic and other aspects. The author presents the results of a detailed review of the works devoted to lexicographical portraying in Russian studies of the XXI century, defines the main aspects of the research tasks performed. The relevance of the study is due to the need for an integral semantic description of the lexical unit «extreme». Scientific novelty is seen in a comprehensive description of the lexeme under study, as a result, the author was able to trace the history of its origin and development, to show the set of its meanings and the nature of its functioning in speech. Lexicographical portraiture of the lexeme «extreme» allows to systematize all linguistic information about the lexical unit under study in one scientific article, which is extremely relevant for further study of the semantics of extreme. As a result the author concludes that the lexeme «extreme» is a polysemant, its lexicographic portrait was not always the same. In the XVIII–XIX centuries, new meanings appeared, which, as the analysis of the dynamics of the development of meanings shows, became common in the Russian language of the XX–XXI centuries. It was revealed that the word «extreme» is a polysemantic, and the prospect of further study is seen in focusing on one meaning of the lexeme «extreme», taking into account the linguistic culture of the Russian people and referring to the national corpus of the Russian language.
