Occasional vocabulary in the Russian emigre press of the 1940s (based on Ilya Surguchev’s journalism material)

Abstract. In our dissertation research, the hypothesis that Ilya Surguchev, a first-wave Russian emigrant, playwright, publicist, prose writer, constructs his own language system at all language levels is presented. In this article we dwell on how creatively he uses the potential of the word-formation level of the Russian language.

The article leads to the conclusion that Ilya Surguchev uses occasionalisms as a creative means to highlight the most striking signs of directly perceived reality on the break of epochs. A classification of occasionalisms is presented: they can be expressive means, to act as stylistic synonyms of well-known concepts; or perform a nominative function – they call new phenomena from the sociopolitical sphere of society.

The fallowing observation is presented, in the text of Surguchev, occasionalisms function in quotes, either accompanied by various metalanguage markers, or without any selection.

As a result of the language study in «Paris Diary» by I. Surguchev (a collection of his journalistic articles of the 1940s), we found examples of affixal, non-affixing (compounding and conversion) and mixed methods of occasional word formation. The classification of methods of occasionalisms formation on the material of more than a hundred identified examples is carried out. The method of compounding is represented most widely. In the article, it is explained by the need of the author to find guidelines, to isolate the components of the rapidly changing reality “here and now” to get in the future the idea of the overall complex picture. The article says that the accumulation of examples of one technique in one or another compositional part of the work, in its turn, serves to create a complex repetition, anaphora, epiphora, gradations, parallelism, etc.

It is especially emphasized that the style of Surguchev was formed in the conditions of a multilingual language environment on the break of epochs and extended the traditions of pre-revolutionary national journalism and literature for decades.
