Abstract. The research subject is the interpretation of patriotism and patriotic feelings in modern Russian media. The research relevance is to identify the position of the Russian media considering patriotism and patriotic feelings. We used the methods of traditional and comparative analysis. The authors consider in detail various directions of studying issues of patriotism from various positions, as well as patriotic attitudes of students, using sociological research conducted by regional universities and centers of the All-Russian level. Special attention is paid to the identification of patriotic and anti-patriotic attitudes in printed pro-government and opposition publications and the theoretical basis for determining true and false patriotism. In the results and conclusions, we substantiated the facts indicating a significant discrepancy in the understanding of patriotism; gave our definition of patriotism; identified the main criteria of true and false patriotism; clarified the position of the Russian media concerning patriotism. We concluded that the values of politically biased publications do not coincide with the values of opposition publications. Moreover, some of them even contradict each other. Modern journalistic patriotic discourse can be characterized by fragmentation. We have identified two main trends in journalistic opinion on patriotism: (1) discrediting true patriotism; (2) the dominance of patriotism as memory, care for citizens, responsibility, and pride in the people and homeland.

Keywords: patriotism; patriotic values; patriotic attitudes; true patriotism; false patriotism; patriotic education; youth
