Abstract. The text material is dedicated to S.P. Diaghilev as a national curatorial activity pioneer. The article notes that Diaghilev’s entire creative activity is connected with the making of large-scale projects that existed and developed for several years. Based on the analysis of S.P. Diaghilev’s project activity, his art projects peculiarities were revealed and the work leading method was determined. Interdisciplinary approach is the leading method of his creative activity, which revealed in many of his projects: «The World of Art», «Russian Seasons», «Historical Russian Concerts», «Russian Ballet». The real arts synthesis showed in the associations he created. Different art types in his projects organically existed, revealed and developed. The article emphasizes S.P. Diaghilev’s work specifics. The stress is concentrated on his high organizational skills and communicative qualities. Diaghilev was not only an excellent practitioner in his projects, but also a great analyst. On the pages of the magazine «World of Art» he gave an assessment of exhibitions, expressed his views on the goals of the exhibition movement. He subtly felt the artistic taste of the public, its demands and, in this regard, skillfully built his project activities. Diaghilev’s art projects were an example of interactivity. All project participants interacted with each other, including the audience. The article emphasizes that all his projects had become a kind of creative laboratory, where new artistic techniques were tried and young talents improved their skills. All Diaghilev’s projects are rightfully considered to be Russian art propaganda. The article underlines that S.P. Diaghilev formed a hard foundation in the curatorial activity development in Russia. Diaghilev’s projects are not only an excellent example of the curatorial activity origin in Russia, but they are also an inspiration source for modern curators.
