Abstract. The article is timed to the centenary of German sociologist Max Weber’s death (1864–1920). The aim of the article is an attempt to consider the problem of trust in M. Weber’s creative work from the point of view of the main problems of his work: aspects of law, religion and domination. The main content of Weber’s legal, religious and economic research is briefly described. It is noted that Weber begins his research in the legal field with a discussion of the role of various social factors and bureaucracy in the determination of the provisions of private law. The social essence of the Roman legal principle fides, as analyzed in Weber’s works, is considered. By the example of Christian religious tradition, the concepts of «faith» and «trust» are correlated. According to Weber, absolute trust in the will of the deity strengthens the emotional side of religion, which should be opposed to the rational nature of social behavior. Weber’s works on the sociological analysis of power and domination, economy and governance are analyzed. In them trust is also an important element of the structure of social relations. According to Weber’s theory of authority, trust is connected with the phenomenon of charisma of the leader. Trust breaks the stereotype about the authoritarian nature of charismatic leadership and allows us to speak about the legitimacy of this form of domination. In conclusion, we consider the thesis that distrust between different social groups arises not because of the rejection of alien customs, but because of the lack of understanding of the content of cultural and historical features of the values of the subject of interaction. It is concluded that it is important to study in detail the works of the classics of sociology within the framework of the analysis of modern social phenomena and processes.
