The influence of interference on the socio-cultural status of the Spanish language on the material of the TV series «Modern Family»

Abstract. The author provides an overview of the phenomenon of linguistic interference because of language contacts. The purpose of the study is to consider the phenomenon of interference and its types as a result of language contacts between American English and Spanish. The author studies the types of language contacts, as well as the types of language interaction. The article demonstrates the phenomenon of interference, provided that this notion is taken as a negative interaction of languages. The linguistic interference at the phonetic and lexical levels of the language, as well as linguistic and cultural interference, is analyzed on the basis of the series «Modern Family». The connection between phonetic interference and interlanguage is given. The author observes the speech of a bilingual individual, tracks specific cases of interference, and identifies the relation between the recipient’s attitude to the speaker due to the presence of interference in their speech. The article provides examples of phonetic, lexical, and linguocultural interference in the speech of the chosen character. The conditions of interference occurrence are described. To conduct the research, such methods as observation, comparison, and analysis were applied. As a result of this study, conclusions are drawn about the correlation of linguistic and linguocultural interference and the lowered socio-cultural status of the Spanish language among native speakers of the American English. The connection between linguistic and cultural interference and the generation of stereotypes in society via the film space has been established. The answer to the question about the intensity of linguistic interference depending on the language level has been obtained.
