Abstract. The XXIst century is characterized by a rethinking of volunteerism related to its contribution to the transformation of society in the context of global instability. Volunteering, the roots of which go back to the traditions of mutual assistance, today helps to solve social problems, support vulnerable groups, protect the environment and develop local communities. Volunteering also contributes to strengthening social cohesion and the development of civil society. The article considers volunteering as an object of interdisciplinary research. Various scientific approaches are outlined, including historical, legal, pedagogical, psychological, economic and philosophical. Considering volunteers as a subject of social change, the author cites the results of a study which found that the majority of respondents (62 %) are convinced that young people should be actively involved in volunteer activities. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of volunteers’ work on environmental projects. It is emphasized that, by promoting the formation of skills and competencies, volunteering also has an impact on personal transformation, as a result of which people change their beliefs, outlook on life and everyday behavior. It is concluded that the changing reality forces social institutions to adapt, in connection with which such a form of social activity of the individual as volunteer activity is actualized.
