Abstract. The research is devoted to the literary work of Maria Louise Kashnitz, a famous German poet, essayist and a short story writer. The peak of the writer’s creativity falls in the middle of the XX century. In the presented article, the authors analyze the novel «Pop and Mingel» / «Pop und Mingel», dedicated to the problem of growing up and the relationship between parents and children. The writer uses linguistic means to compare two families of the main character of the narrative: real and fictional. A comparative analysis of the real and fictional family allows the authors to identify the main problems in the child’s family, determine his feelings towards his parents and realize that alone he will not be able to change anything in order to be happy and bring harmony to relationships with loved ones. The leitmotif of the novel is the loneliness of the main character and an attempt to avoid it, plunging into a world of fantasies and dreams. The age of the child and the outlook that he possesses pushes him to a possible transformation of relations in the family with the help of destructive actions, the consequences of which give a starting step to the boy’s growing up.
The article analyzes the lexical units and grammatical constructions used by the writer to convey the mood of the characters and their feelings. The authors carry out analysis of the cultural context of the era of narration (так лучше), which allows them to assess the prevailing values in society in the post-war period in Germany, with a large material dominant leading to the inevitable transformation of the spiritual component, the impossibility and inability to build a constructive dialogue that could stop or prevent problematic situations in the family.
